Nina Dobrev portrays 17-year-old girl Elena Gilbert, the main female protagonist of the series. She starts her senior year with her best friends. A mysterious, hansom boy named Stefan Salvatore also enrolls. Elena immediately falls in love with him. It's soon revealed that Stefan is a vampire. His brother Damon, who is also a vampire, shows up in Mystic Falls shortly after. As the series progresses, he begins to develop feelings for Elena. Elena's life changes drastically as her friends and herself are caught up in the supernatural world that surrounds them and are forced to face powerful supernatural enemies. Nina also portrays Elena's doppelganger Katherine Pierce, also known as Katerina Petrova.
